My ancestors came from many places in Europe. I have heritage in Italy, Holland, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany. My last name, Juliano, is Italian and was once spelled Guiliano. The largest percent of my heritage is from Italy, but the second largest is from Germany. While I am almost half Italian, I only have Italian heritage from my Father's side of the family. I have German heritage, however, from both sides of my family.
In an attempt to connect with my German heritage, I sought to learn German. Approximately one year ago I began using Rosetta Stone which, at the time, was a free resource through the Pinellas Public Library Cooperative. That resource was eventually discontinued by Rosetta Stone. Since then, I have purchased Rosetta Stone for myself and have learned a lot of German. This experience has helped me feel connected to Germany.
That being said, I still do not know enough German to read the news in German, so I have to rely on an English translation. The website thelocal.de is a German news website that is written in English. For those who do not know, other countries use different domains. The US has a couple domains, but the most common is .com. Germany uses .de for their websites. Since their country is smaller than ours, I believe they only use that one.
This website is organized like most news websites with various news categories near the top of the page in a Tab-like format.
